Description:
Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic that belongs to the azalide subclass. It is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
Mechanism of Action:
Azithromycin works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis and stopping bacterial growth. It is bacteriostatic (prevents bacteria from growing) but can be bactericidal (kills bacteria) at higher concentrations.
Uses:
Azithromycin 250 mg is prescribed for infections such as:
- Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)
- Ear, nose, and throat infections (pharyngitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Sexually transmitted infections (chlamydia)
- Typhoid fever
- Bacterial diarrhea and dysentery
Dosage & Administration:
- The usual adult dose is 500 mg on the first day, followed by 250 mg once daily for the next 4 days (total 5-day course).
- For certain infections like sexually transmitted diseases, a single 1g (1000 mg) dose may be prescribed.
- Pediatric and alternate dosing depend on body weight and infection severity.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Stomach pain, bloating
- Headache, dizziness
- Loss of appetite
Serious but rare side effects:
- Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)
- Irregular heartbeat (QT prolongation)
- Liver problems (jaundice, hepatitis)
Precautions & Warnings:
- Avoid in severe liver or kidney disease.
- Not recommended for people with heart rhythm disorders (risk of QT prolongation).
- Should not be taken with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium (reduces absorption).
- Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding (consult a doctor).
Drug Interactions:
- Warfarin (increases bleeding risk)
- Statins (risk of muscle toxicity)
- Digoxin (increased toxicity)
- Other QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., amiodarone, fluoroquinolones)
