Active Ingredient:
- Levofloxacin (500 mg): A broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
Description & Mechanism of Action:
Levofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial replication and repair. This action prevents bacterial growth and leads to their elimination.
Uses:
Levogen 500 mg is prescribed for treating bacterial infections such as:
- Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Ear, nose, and throat infections (sinusitis, tonsillitis)
- Sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea)
- Gastrointestinal infections (traveler’s diarrhea, typhoid fever)
- Bone and joint infections
Dosage & Administration:
- Adults: 500 mg once daily (or as prescribed).
- For severe infections: May be increased to 750 mg once daily.
- Duration: Typically 5-14 days, depending on the infection type.
- Take with or without food, but avoid taking with dairy or calcium-rich foods.
- Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
Side Effects:
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- Dizziness, headache
- Stomach pain, bloating
- Skin rash, itching (possible allergic reactions)
- Risk of tendon rupture (especially in older adults and those on corticosteroids)
- Photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight)
Precautions & Warnings:
- Avoid in children under 18 (risk of joint & tendon issues).
- Not recommended in pregnancy & breastfeeding (consult a doctor).
- Use with caution in kidney disease (dose adjustment may be needed).
- Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight (risk of sunburn).
Drug Interactions:
- NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, diclofenac): May increase seizure risk.
- Warfarin: May increase the risk of bleeding.
- Antacids, iron, and calcium supplements: Reduce absorption of Levofloxacin (take them 2 hours apart).
- Corticosteroids: Increase the risk of tendon rupture.
